Join us for a talk with local author Don Roberts, as he discusses his most recent book, IT STARTED IN THE HOLLOW. The third of his novels set in Northwestern PA, his work focuses on the social history of the people in the village. Each novel is a standalone feature.
Best friends for life, Flossie and Clara, both born in 1900, had much in common. They lived in Whistler, Pennsylvania, a strictly religious village in northwestern PA and both gave birth to illegitimate sons. Then everything changed. One son was secretly adopted by a relative; the other was called a bastard, and his beautiful but disgraced mother scrubbed floors and washed dirty laundry for little pay. Each had reason to feel sorry for the other. This novel follows their parallel lives.
Don Roberts’s formal education began in a one-room school in Mercer County. He graduated from Slippery Rock State College and earned a PhD. in History from the University of Pittsburgh. He taught in Beaver Fallls and Penn Hills and then became a History lecturer at Pitt while teaching in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. This dual career continued for 35 years. After retirement, he tried his hand at writing, with this being his third novel.
