Learn techniques, materials and tools for creating unique surface design on textiles with dyes. Introduction to Dye Painting on Textiles (6-part series) Bethany Hwang 6-Part Series Workshop! Date: Tuesdays, November 10 – December 15, 2026 Time: 6pm-9pm Description: The Fibers Studio at Contemporary Craft is thrilled to introduce you to the Beth Wainwright Dye Lab, an exciting new resource in our suite of studios! Painting with dyes is a way to add unique designs in vibrant color to textiles, while maintaining the drape and natural hand of the cloth! In this beginner course, students will learn how to use and prepare fiber reactive dyes for painting on natural fibers! Students will learn how to mix pastes and will also learn how to ensure that the pigments bond to the fiber for lasting color. And, along the way, Bethany will share her love of color and painting. What are fiber reactive dyes? Fiber reactive dyes chemically react with fiber molecules to create a bond. This means that the color, if fixed properly, will be permanent and will minimally fade with washings and exposure to light! Students can expect to create 1-3 (depending on scale) finished dye paintings using fiber reactive dye on cotton. At the end of the course, students will have foundational skills in mixing dye paste and how to plan for and achieve desired outcomes. Generally, students will complete the course with a sense of confidence to use dye on fabric and a strong base from which to explore their new skills on their own.
