Bettis: Where Pittsburgh Aviation Took Off
The excitement of flying in the 1920s spanned primitive barnstorming to the launch of airmail and commercial flight. Join thousands of Pittsburghers greeting "Lucky Lindy", witness a crash into a steel mill while trying to cure a passenger’s deafness, and marvel at the skills of the area's many women pilots. It all happened a century ago at a little airfield in West Mifflin called Bettis, now the site of a nuclear research facility.
Authors and historians Brian Butko and Sue Morris will share fun, fascinating stories from their book about the dawn of aviation in Pittsburgh. Prepare for take-off!
BRIAN BUTKO grew up near Bettis and graduated from Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. Director of Publications at the Heinz History Center, he is the author of books on Lincoln Highway, Kennywood, and Isaly’s.
SUE MORRIS has been writing about regional history since 2012 as the Historical Dilettante. In addition to her work online, she is an award-winning author who regularly contributes to the History Center blog and Western Pennsylvania History magazine.
